Ms Caroline McIntyre is a final year medical student who was selected as the Professor William Campbell Scholarship Student for summer 2018.
During her 8 week placement with Donegal Clinical Research Academy she undertook a meta-analysis and systematic review on readmissions to hospital following laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
Caroline won the best poster prize at the UCD Surgical Conference which was held this month in St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin. The meta-analysis revealed a mean readmission rate of 3.3%. The most common causes for readmission were surgical complications however causes were inconsistently reported. No statistically significant risk factors were identified. The mean readmission rate of 3.3% may act as a quality benchmark for improving laparoscopic cholecystectomies.
In addition clearer reporting of reasons for readmission may aid in their reduction.
