The 8th Annual Multidisciplinary Research Symposium

“Education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world”

Nelson Mandela

The 8th Annual Multidisciplinary Research Symposium, held on 23rd of November, was a great success, building on previous symposia in Letterkenny University Hospital. There were a total of 50 pieces of research, 19 oral and 31 poster presentations, including distinguished guest speakers:

Dr Martin Cormican, Professor of Microbiology, NUIG. Dr Malcolm Lewis, Consultant in Paediatric Nephrology, Crumlin Hospital Dublin. Professor Juan Sancho, Chief Surgeon at Hospital Del Mar, Barcelona.

All the presentations were of exceptional standard resulting in a total of 9 medals being awarded including the inaugural Professor William C. Campbell, Nobel Laureate Medal for Excellence which went to Ms Aoife Wilson et al, for their paper entitled “The appropriate use of red blood cells in Letterkenny University Hospital in compliance with NICE guidelines”.

The symposium concluded with an entertaining and thought provoking keynote address by Prof. Juan Sancho, entitled “The present and future of Emergency Surgery”. And special thanks went to the main organizer, Anne Frize, who is already planning our next research symposium in 2019.
