Emergency-Abdominal-Surgery-Course-goes-virtual-DCRADonegal Clinical Research Academy based at Letterkenny University Hospital is proud to share the successful outcomes of three Emergency Abdominal Surgery courses with you. The Emergency Abdominal Surgery course, with the symbol trademark behind it, was established in 2012 in Letterkenny Hospital and now is the world leading course in Emergency Surgery for trainees globally. It has been run in 11 countries with over two thousand trainees involved.

This year, for the first time, we had virtual courses in both the Trainee course and the new Consultant course. The Medical Student emergency abdominal surgery course, developed by the Donegal Clinical Research Academy, was also extremely well received on the virtual platform. Mr Sugrue, EASC Co-ordinator, feels that the manner in which this course is taught has laid new foundations for educational curriculum. The course is generally rated by 70% of those who undertake it as ‘the best course they have attended in their training’.

The course is taught by a faculty from surgery, intensive care, nursing and radiology; over 150 world experts have so far taught on these courses. Mr Sugrue hopes that the course can be expanded to a more global destination using this virtual platform. He is very grateful to Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) for use of their high speed broadband facilitating the virtual platform. A new course will be developed this year to encompass Nursing and Allied Health.
