Nobel Laureate is guest lecturer at Letterkenny University Hospital’s 7th annual Multidisciplinary Research Symposium.


Letterkenny University Hospital’s 7th annual Multidisciplinary Research Symposium was held on Friday 24th November 2017. 


Prof Campbell and guest speakers LUH 2017The Symposium was honoured to have the esteemed Professor William C Campbell [Nobel Laureate Medicine 2015] as the main guest at the conference. Professor Campbell charmed and inspired the conference attendees with his lecture entitled ‘Discovering Medicines.’ The lecture reported his involvement in discovering a novel therapy against infections caused by roundworm. The impact of this new drug has been phenomenal in treating river blindness and lymphatic filariasis for millions of people worldwide.

Prof Campbell guest lecturers and studentsThree esteemed international guest speakers also gave outstanding presentations on cutting edge issues in healthcare including ‘Clinical Burnout: Treat the cause Not the symptoms’ [Dr Paddy Barrett, Consultant Cardiologist]; ‘Bariatric Medicine’ [Professor Francis Finucane, Consultant Endocrinologist] and ‘Health Innovation Hub Ireland’ [Professor John Higgins, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Dr Coleman Casey, Director of Health Innovation Hub Ireland].
Letterkenny University Hospital’s active clinical research culture was very evident today with around 45 Medical doctors, Medical students and Allied Professionals participating in the symposium and presenting their research. Professor Campbell, from Ramelton in Donegal, recently made a generous donation to Donegal Clinical Research Academy to foster medical research on an annual basis. The recipient of his inaugural scholarship, Katie Bailey, presented her research at this symposium and was the Gold medal winner in the medical students’ category.
